A Dream Come True
As our kids began to perform today in Monterey, a personal dream for both Leon and I came true. One of our goals since starting KCYJ was to someday take students outside the KC area to perform, both to promote Kansas City Jazz and also to build the personal growth of our students.
As I watched the students perform, my mind drifted to the Reno kids as individuals and how far they have come and...
And we thought Kansas was windy..........
The KCYJ Reno band fought the wind and cold at the first performance of the day. Our students were scheduled to perform at Fisherman’s Wharf at 12:30pm. By the time our group was allowed to set up, they were about 45 minutes behind schedule.
It was so windy that a speaker tower, several music stands and lots of music went flying, even though we came prepared with clips and clothes pins....
Wow, what a day!
It’s well past midnight as I write this, past 2:00am in Kansas City. That means we’ve been up about 22 hours. It seems like we’ve lived about three days in one.
We met at KCI at 6:15am, flew to Los Angeles, then on to San Jose. From there we boarded a shuttle for a scenic (and entertaining drive to Monterey.) Reno parents did you know that your kids could sing, too? We got...
California Here We Come!
We’ve started a Tumblr blog to record our journey to play at The Monterey Jazz Festival’s Next Generation Festival. It is an unbelievable honor to be asked to play. So we’re going to write about it, photograph it, record it and video it (assuming that I can figure out how to work my new Flip Mino).
